Beautiful Rainbow over Rydal- what a great walk.

This great photo was taken by one of our lovely guests at White Moss House a few weeks ago.
I've written a detailed description of the walk round Rydal Water. You're very welcome to take a look and print it off.

Monday 8 November 2010

Snow on the Lake District fells today.

Looking out of the window this morning, Loughrigg had a coating of snow. Wansfell looks pretty white too, and it's cold and windy!
Definitely the end of summer, and autumn too.
Time to snuggle up by the log fire with a good book.
I'm thinking about making the Christmas puddings, and maybe some home made chocolate truffles,- perhaps I can freeze some and use them at Christmas too..... if there are any left!

Saturday 30 October 2010

The autumn colours really are looking great!

I know, we say this every year, but I've just been out to Grasmere to get the newspapers, and driving back around Penny Rock  Woods, the trees were just the most incredible shades of brown, red , orange, and everything in between.
Do try to come up for a night or two ( free bottle of wine by the log fire for stays of 2 or more nights).
Check our rates online, then email me to book- please!

A Walk Round Rydal Water in the next few days would be two hours well spent.

Lots of very happy guests at White Moss House

Half term is always very busy in the Lakes, but this year everyone was predicting doom and gloom, with all the spending cuts looming. With a couple of weeks to go, our booking chart looked very thin, but happily we filled up, and the guests who came have been so complimentary!
Some had stayed in B & Bs Ambleside or Grasmere before, and they just loved the special qualities of White Moss House- the Wordsworth history, the Wordworth lounge with its log fire- great for a game of scrabble at the end of the day. The car park was much apprecciated too- if you've stayed in the villages before you'll know the problem.
Walking from the door round Rydal , Grasmere and Loughrigg has also scored brilliantly with our guests.
We know what a great place White Moss House is- we've been here for 30 years!
If you can fit in a visit, we are open for 2 more weeks.
We are also taking bookings for 2011!
To check availabilty and prices, we now have our online booking system up and running
Just click on White Moss House online bookings .
We hope to see you soon!.

How about a November break?

At the end of the week the half term hoards leave, and the Lakes settle down to a period of calm. Here at White Moss House, we stay open until 14 November, so why not consider a short break?
If you would like to see our best rates, and check availabilty, you can do so by clicking on this link, which will take you to our online booking system. You'll find that the best rates are for stays of 3 or more nights- why not take a look?

You'll see that we have some extra special rates and offers for November.

If you are planning to visit the Lake at Christmas, we won't be open ( sorry- we're full with family and friends!) , but I've written a web page, Christmas in the Lake District, which will give you lots of useful tips and information.

Amazing weather this autumn - the Lake District trees look fantastic.

What an odd year it's been for weather! Maybe we could say that every year- no years seem to be "normal" these days.
This year in the Lake District we had no rain to speak of from January to June. People not on mains water ran dry around April and on July 9 a hose pipe ban came into force.
That was the day it started to rain, and it didn't seem to stop until September. However, the last two weeks have been dry, sunny and warm, and even though colder weather is on its way, the storms seem to be keeping away.
I've just put a special offer on our website, so if you click on this link you'll see how you can save at least £60 on your visit to White Moss House. Stay in November and we'll throw in a bottle of wine for your to enjoy by the log fire in the Wordsworth Lounge.
Here's an autumn picture to whet your appetite.

Poetry Readings at Dove Cottage- a great way to spend a Lake District Evening

If you are planning a stay at White Moss House ( once owned by William Wordsworth!) take a look at the Dove Cottage website to see what special events are on there that you can visit during your stay.

From April to October, leading poets read their own works in Grasmere church, alternate Tuesdays. This week we are delighted that Annie Freud, who is reading her poetry in Grasmere tonight, has chosen to stay with us at White Moss House for her visit to the  Lake Distirct.

Other poets have also stayed here!

Dove Cottage wants to keep poetry alive, rather than just be known for William Wordsworth and the Romantic poets. A brilliant and very successful concept. Take the chance to stay in the only house Wordsworth ever owned ( White Moss of course) on your visit to Wordsworth's Lake District.

Blackerry time ! A great White Moss blackberry recipe for you.

The hedges are bursting with blackberries around Rydal Water and Grasmere right now.
Our Grasmere Apple and Blackberry crumble recipe is a perfect way to use the blackberries.
What is the Grasmere part of this recipe? Well, you've heard of Grasmere Gingerbread, and this recipe has a hint of ginger in it, which just adds a little extra something to the usual recipe.

This is an up market crumble!
You are welcome to use this White Moss recipe- please leave a comment on the bottom of the page if you enjoyed it.

Congratulations from White Moss House some very special walkers

Four of our guests last weekend completed all 214 of the "Wainwright walks". One of the ladies had decided on her 50th birthday that she wanted to make a point of walking every fell in every book, and on Sunday they did walk 214, Crinkle Crags in the Langdales.

The weather was good, and a bottle of champagne in the sun in White Moss garden marked the end of a great campaign!

A fine example to all ! Congratulations!

Back at White Moss House, Grasmere after the wedding.

Some of you who know us or read my blog will know that our eldest son was getting married this summer.
Well, the big day was Saturday, 24 July. The wedding was held in St Edmunds Church East Mersea, on Meresa Island near Colchester, and the reception at East Mersea Hall next door.
It's a really lovely place, and the whole of Mersea Island is like a little place that time has passed by.
Or new daughter in law knew the island from her childhood, and her mother lives close by.
It's now back to reality- a busy summer of B & B at White Moss House Grasmere.
We do still have some rooms in August, and are offering 10% off stays of 3 or more nights midweek in August.( subject to availabilty)
For more details please look at our website.

What eats wasps? Badgers eat wasps! Latest from Grasmere.

Following yesterday's burning question, do badgers eat wasps? The answer is yes!
Our gardener tells us that badger do eat wasps- so there we have it!

How a badger came in the night to Whitemoss garden, and dug up a wasp nest just below our bedroom window without us hearing anything is another question!

Tuesday 13 July 2010

Do badgers eat wasps part 2

White Moss House Bed and Breakfast Grasmere, the scene of an overnight garden mystery- do badgers eat wasps?

Here are two incriminating photos. The walls of the nest have been broken up . They actually have honycomb patterns like a bees nest- makes sense I suppose- I've never seen inside a wasps nest before. There is no sign of any of the tasty grubs ( I believe fishermen sometimes use them as bait), just a few shell shocked, dopey looking wasps ( which is why I could get so close)

I've often wondered what function wasps served in God's Great Plan. If they give a badger ( or whatever) a good dinner, then that's a fair use for them in my book.

If you have any info on this, please eamil me- sue@whitemoss.com, or tweet me, @whitemosshouse.

Do badgers eat wasps?

Today's burning question from White Moss House, Grasmere is.... what eats wasps?

In the garden we have a wasps nest, which was actually built in a hole dug by a mouse. We've been trying to get rid of it for days, in a gentle sort of way, but the odd wasp keeps appearing.

This morning, we find that an area about 18 inches in diameter and about 18 inches deep has been excavated, and we can now see the bottom of the waps nest with about 10 wasps left. It has what looks like paper round the egdes- quite clever really.

It looks like a badger hole, but there are no droppings- who knows?

Hopefully the puffer will finish them off this time.

Walks from White Moss House, Grasmere

One of the great things about staying at White Moss House bed and breakfast, Grasmere, is that you can do amazing walks from the front door. You don't need to take your car to go around Rydal, round Grasmere, oever Loughrigg, to Alcock tarn, up Nab Scar to Fairfield.........and many more!

Here are some of the walks you can do Cricular walks from White Moss, Grasmere..

If you want to walk round Rydal, taking in the caves, Rydal Tea room, Rydal Mount, Rydal Hall Gardens and the Badger Bar , then The Rydal Water Walk describes this in more details for you.

Thanks to Cumbria Tourism and David Willis for the photo, taken from the shore of Rydal Water looking back towards Whitemoss , with Silver Howe in the background.

Great things to see from White Moss House Grasmere

One thing that lots of visitors to the Lake District overlook is Castlerigg Stone Circle.
Perched up on a plateau just before you get to Keswick, about 20 minutes drive from White Moss House and Grasmere, this neolithic stone circle dates back around 5,000 years.

It is a truly amazing location, surrounded by the lakeland fells- Blencathra, Skiddaw, Helvellyn.
There is no visitors centre, no tea room, no entrance charge.
You may even find yourself on your own there- apart from the local sheep.

Wednesday 7 July 2010

Hosepipe Ban for the Lake District

It's hard to believe after we had more rainfall on 19 November 2009 than on any day on record EVER, but from Friday we are not allowed to use hosepipes to water our gardens or wash our cars.
It has been such a dry spring here in Grasmere and the rest of the Lake District.

The phone has not stopped ringing in the last 24 hours with people looking for rooms for the weekend.

We are fully booked, but if you want rooms next weekend, ring now! or email me sue@whitemoss.com.

Lavender looking good at White Moss House, Grasmere

Here at White Moss, Grasmere, in the Lake District we're in the middle of a very, very dry spell. After the floods of November 2009, it is hard to imagine, but we are having a drought, and there is talk of a hosepipe ban soon!
The lavender , however, is just loving this dry, sunny weather- and so are the bees.
At White Moss House we have at least 6 different lavenders- heavenly!

Wednesday 16 June 2010

White Moss House and the Wordsworth Rose

At White Moss House guest house, Grasmere, we have an ancient rose, which we call the Wordsworth Rose. The house was bought by poet William Wordsworth for his son, Willie, and the poet often called in and sat in the porch where the rose gr0ws.
We are told it is very old, so we think it dates back to the time of William Wordsworth.
It flowers once a year, just a few very scented blooms, and its out now! If you would like to stay, enjoying the glorious June weather, we have rooms free from Sunday 20 June for up to 4 nights, and again from 26 June (only 1 room left on 28 June).
Please email me if you want to make a last minute booking- I can offer you a June discount if you can stay 2 or more nights.
( we are fully booked on 17, 18 and 19 June, and also on 24 and 25 June)

Tuesday's walk from White Moss House, Grasmere

The View from Jenkin's Crag, Waterhead, Ambleside, overlooking Windermere.

The walk actually begins and ends in Ambleside, but we hopped on the bus at Whitemoss- no point trying to find a day's parking space in Ambleside ( especially if you have a bus pass!).
We walked up Stock Ghyll, over Wansfell, had lunch at the Mortal Man, then back round Jenkins crag.
It's a walk we've done many times before, sometimes the other way round.

As it was a hazy day, the photos are poor. This is the gentle path back from Robin's Lane, with Windermere on the left and the Langdales in the background.

Some people only manage the short walk from Waterhead to Jenkin's crag. Even on a hazy day the view from Jenkin's Crag is superb.

Outstanding on this walk were the wild flowers- bluebells, wood sorrel, wild garlic , buttercups, violets, little yellow orchids. The hawthorn trees are also finally bursting into life. Popularly known as "May" trees", they are just managing to blossom before the end of the month in this late spring.

May Tree looking gorgeoous, above Waterhead, Ambleside.
We thought we had just missed the bus back from Waterhead, where the walk ends, but happily for us, the bus was 10 minutes late- dropped off at the bottom of White Moss House drive.
Note to all visitors to White Moss House- if you have a bus pass, bring it !

Sweet cicely at White Moss House, Grasmere

Sweet cicely is a great herb , and it's looking extra good this year. Here is a photo taken this morning from our kitchen door looking into the Whitemoss herb garden.

It's a very pretty herb, with its masses of white flowers. Its main use for us it as a sweetener in rhubarb, gooseberry and other fruit desserts. If you chop up sweet cicely leaves and add them to the fruit, you can halve the amount of sugar you use. Nature's own low calorie sweetener!

For more information on sweet cicely , plus an amazing recipe for sweet cicely schnapps, you can take a look here.

White Moss goes to Sizergh Castle- gardens looking fantastic!

If you can get to Sizergh Castle, near Kendal, this week, then do- the blossom is amazing and the gardens are looking great.
Here are some of my photos from yesterday. They don't do it justice, but you get the idea! This is a wonderful tulip border.
Part of the famous rock garden

The cherry blossom avenue- just spectacular- worth the annual National Trust membership on its own!
And of course, there's the castle- a remarkable building to look around- and the tea room is pretty nice too!
Sometimes we overlook the wonderful things to see close to home- if you are near Kendal- go to Sizergh now!

Sunday 2 May 2010

Herdwick lambs invade White Moss House Grasmere!

Herdwick lambs- so tiny, so cute! Their mums thought the grass and bluebells at White Moss House were so much better than in their own field.
Most herdwick lambs are black, turning grey later.
This one is quite bold

Time to gently send them back over the wall to their field

No doubt they'll soon be back!

Primroses at White Moss House, Grasmere

This blog is turning into a nature blog! Bluebells, blossom, and now primroses.
These little beauties are beside the path that goes from White Moss House  to our Grasmere self catering cottage, Brockstone, which is on the "coffin route" from Rydal to Grasmere church.
This path was washed away by the floods of November 2009, but the LDNPA have done a beautiful restoration job on it.

Please, please, always leave wild flowers for others to enjoy- don't pick the primroses ( and certainly, if you see anyone trying to dig them up -stop them!)

Tuesday 27 April 2010

Wordsworths at White Moss House , Grasmere

It was good to welcome back members of the Wordsworth family to White Moss House this weekend, in Grasmere to celebrate the senior Mr Wordsworth's 70th birthday.
When we first lived at White Moss House , about 30 years ago, the generation of Wordsworths who had lived at White Moss as children used to drop in on us an roam around as if they still lived here.( We used to call them a "host of  golden Wordsworths" when they descended on us!)

It was always lovely to see them, and hear their anecdotes. For example, Dorothy told us she was actually christened Dorothy Wordsworth, so that as an unmarried girl her name was Dorothy Wordsworth Wordsworth- so that she would still have the Wordsworth name after her marriage. This would have been in the days when married women gave up their maiden name.

Wordsworths are always welcome at White Moss House, the only house that the poet William Wordsworth ever owned.

The first Bluebells of 2010 at White Moss House, Grasmere

I'm sure they weren't there yesterday, but here they are- bluebells in White Moss House garden, pushing their way through amongst the fading daffodils.
We are so lucky with the weather just now- day after day of blue skies and sunshine- and now the bluebells- another reason to visit White Moss House, Grasmere 4 Star guest house, in the next few weeks.

Wednesday 21 April 2010

White Moss House and the ash cloud

As the flights re start today, lets hope that all those who find themselves in the wrong part of the world get back as soon as possible.
I have to say that we have benefitted this week from the ash, with guests who have been unable to go abroad coming to stay at White Moss House instead.
They've been rewarded with the best , sunniest weather they could wish for. It's still chilly, but it just fabulous.
The quince is out, the cherries are out, the magnolia is coming out, the azaleas are coming out- there's no better time to visit White Moss House, our Grasmere 4 Star guest house.

The AA lady came yesterday- very impressed to see that we had beautiful  new fire doors, new carpet ( room 2) new decoration (room 3). Apparently lots of people of not spending in the recession, and some of the places she visits are getting a bit run down.
White Moss House- 4 Stars again!
Post script to the Ash Cloud Story- a Japanese guest coming in May has just emailed me to ask what it's like driving around on ash covered roads!
No ash on roads or anywhere else! The lakes never looked better.

Herdwick sheep at White Moss House Grasmere part 2

So, there are about 6 of the blighters (Herdwicks) that is, in the garden, nibbling the daffodils.

Husband opens the gate, and we both chase them towards the gate, when a group of tourists walk by, stand in the gateway with their cameras, blocking the sheep who turn and run off to an inaccessible part of the garden.

Chap with camera says " I say, are those a local breed? What ? Herdwicks? Marvellous !How interesting!"

Don't you just love tourists? Well ,we do of course- no question about that!

You have to laugh.

Tuesday 13 April 2010

Herdwick sheep at White Moss House, Grasmere B & B

Sheep in the garden again this morning. Both local farmers claim they're not theirs, then if the marking proves they are, they blame the Rydal Estate for not mending the walls! Hey Ho!
We'll just live with them as usual. Once they've got the taste of fresh grass there's no stopping them.
I've just written an article about the herdwick Herdwick Sheep- please take a look and leave me any messages or links you would like to see.
Our local Herdwicks haven't lambed yet- they are the last to lamb in the area ( maybe in the while country)- the farmer aims for April 23rd- St Georges Day.

Just 25 minutes drive away from Rydal Water, Grasmere and White Moss House- another great natural event on our doorstep!

Its seem that along with Daffodils, and lambing, we can now add the Ospreys to the Lake District Spring Events. Fingers crossed for a successful 2010 Osprey birth!

There are two woodpeckers attacking the trees in the back garden with great vigour. The other birds are skittering all over in a very flighty ( is that where the word came from?) manner, and the Daffodils are out at last.
Stay for 2 nights or more, midweek before the end of April at White Moss House and take a 10% discount on the usual rates.
Don't wait- come now and see the daffodils!( picture to follow- I'm off out with my camera now)

Another great walk from White Moss House Grasmere.

Walking in short sleeves in the sun! The air is still very cold- my drink stayed iced!
From White Moss, go up to the coffin road, then left to the duck pond near Dove Cottage, taking the Alcock tarn path above the duck pond.
Lovely view of Helm Crag on this walk.
After about 1/4 mile, the main path goes right, but fork left, and eventually you come out at Ben Place Grasmere, by our Lady of the Wayside on the A591.
Didn't see a single person !
Crossed the main road, took the path into Grasmere, popped into Coop to buy an apple, back through Broadgate meadow, on the Grasmere Riverside walk, coming out near Dove Cottage, then back to White Moss on the old road ( the one Wordsworth used )
View of Grasmere from Lady Wood on the old road.

There can't be many other places in the world with such great walks from the door. Fantastic!

Daffodils very nearly out at White Moss, Grasmere

A couple of more days, and the little yellow beauties will be out- spring must be here!
If you want to take a look at Wordsworth's Daffodils , my latest web page over on Squidoo, you'll see lots of glorious photos.
BTW, just got in from a walk, on which we saw a group of youngsters swimming in Grasmere. They swam out to the ice which still covers lots of the lake,   about 20 yards from the shore!
They were on some sort of challenge, maybe Duke of Edinburgh. Anyway, good luck to them!!!!!

Sunshine and snowdrops at White Moss, Grasmere

Snowdrops in White Moss House, Grasmere garden

"Why worry?
There should be sunshine after rain,
These things have always been the same,
So why worry now? "
(Dire Straits- sadly overlooked by philosophers I feel)

On Thursday 19 November 2009 the heavens opened on Cumbria and a 48 hour torrent flooded the area turning roads into rivers, gardens into lakes.

Now, less than 4 months later,  the snowdrops and sunshine bring a promise of spring, and hopefully, a great summer.

Business that were flood affected are reopening, visitors are flocking back to enjoy the amazing scenery that early spring offers- clear blue skies, with a dash of snow on the tops.
Come back to Cumbria! ( and White Moss House of course!)

White Moss Grasmere- loved by herons!

White Moss Tarn, just above White Moss House, is the haunt of this chap ( I think it's a he!). I see him often, and so get a bit blase about him.
Then, when a visitor sees him for the first time and gets all excited I have to think- should I do a Michael Winner, "Calm down dear , it's only a heron", or should I seem very excited too?
I take the excited route. Well, he's not bad looking, and he loves to pose for photos.
