Here's one visitor who made it through the snow

It's been snowing all day- some guests have been unable to get to Grasmere and the Lake District.
However, we have one visitor who has arrived- but we're not that delighted.

Deer in White Moss House herb garden.
I've just taken this photo- his/her friend's back legs can be seen running off as they heard me. Deer may look pretty,( well , OK, they really do look cute)  but they can eat any green shoots in seconds.

News about availablity. Our cottage is now fully booked until the middle of April- all the last minute gaps were filled.

We do have rooms for Easter in White Moss House still available. You can email sue@whitemoss.com, or ring me on 015394 35295 . 2 night minimum stay.

Romance is in the air....again!

For the second time in a few weeks, a couple have got engaged during their stay at White Moss House! They have been together for quite a time, and had stayed here years ago. They had happy memories of White Moss House, and the gentleman wanted to come back to the same room they stayed in before to make his proposal.

At breakfast we tried to gauge the mood- was the lovely lady smiling, what was the verdict? We weren't sure.......then at check out I asked if they were going straight back home......?

"No- we're going shopping for rings....she said yes!" Joy all round!

We wish them all the very best for their wedding and their future together.

The bad news is that if you want to get engaged here at White Moss House, you'll have to wait until March 2013, when we reopen after our winter break. You could still come to stay at our lovely cottage up on the fell though. Brockstone , our self catering holiday cottage with excellent views of Rydal Water and the Lake District fells is still available from 1 December to 21 December, 3 January to 31 January, and 28 February to 30 March. Short breaks are on offer. We welcome dogs - the guests there right now have declared our Grasmere holiday cottage to be "dog heaven"

Rydal Water by David Willis, Cumbria Tourism. May not be used without permission.

This is one of the lovely views on our doorstep. White Moss House is just behind the clump of trees that go out into the lake, and Brockstone Cottage is on the path that goes through the trees above the barn that you can see in the field.

We are now taking bookings for 2013 in Brockstone cottage and in White Moss House bed and
breakfast. Forward bookings are looking good, so don't leave it too long to make your reservation.

Our guests loved the Pure Lakes shampoo

At White Moss House, only the best will do, which is why we use shampoo, soap and shower gel from Pure Lakes. Made in Staveley by Sandra and Iain Blackburn from Grasmere, Pure Lakes products couldn't be more local. We recycle the containers , filling lovely little reusable bottles in the guests' bathrooms, so that no plastic is thrown away. It's green, organic, local and fantastic. A guest from Texas who was here last week has emailed me to ask for help on where to buy the shampoo she used here, as it was "the best shampoo I've have ever used"

A few years ago I had a battle ( sorry- that should probably be "useful discussion") with the AA Inspector who said that we should have those annoying little individual soaps and shampoos in tiny bottles. I said NO! We will have Pure Lakes and we will fill up the bottles. They threatened to mark us down for such heresy. This year, it seems as if we were ahead of our time. Green is good now, and the AA is happy.

For those of you who want to buy your own Pure Lakes products, here is the link to the Pure Lakes website. (I'm not on commision by the way!) My own absolutely favourite Pure Lakes product is the Rosehip and Neroli night oil. For "mature" skins such as mine, this feels fabulous, seems to make my skin look better, and it smell great too.

We do still have a few rooms available this week, and one room left for the weekend on a special 2 night weekend offer. Please ring 015394 35295 or email sue@whitemoss.com for details, or look on our  White Moss House website

Bluebells, magnolia and quince in March

Yesterday, 28 March, I noticed that the bluebells were out in the White Moss House garden. With the hot weather and sun, the magnolia has already burst into bloom, and the quince is starting to flower too.

We open today after our winter break. Usually, we've got weeks of daffodils ahead when we open, and I can fills the rooms with daffodils from our garden for ages, well into April. Today I've had to scour the gardens for the few remaining daffs. They were lovely, but they've finished for the year.

If you've got time to visit before Easter, take advantage of our special offers. Our bed and breafast offers are updated daily . Click on this link to go to the special offer page on our website. Why not bookmark the page to keep up to date with our special bed and breakfast offers? These are mostly late minute offers, but there may be other special rates from time to time.

I might as well show you the magnolia too- that's going to be out for a few weeks yet.

Planning ahead for 2012

I've had so many requests for bed and breakfast rooms at White Moss House, and self-catering stays at Brockstone for 2012, that I've now set up a proper booking chart instead of filling in notes in my diary.

We don't usually take bookings for the year ahead until we reach the end of November-don't know why- it's a tradition! However, with everyone predicting doom and gloom, and the stock market plummeting today ( no point cashing in the pensions right now), we decided to get the 2012 calender out so those of you who want a certain room on a certain day in July are now very welcome to make the reservation. Make that 2 days actually- we don't take usually 1 night bookings.

2012 looks interesting, with the old May Whit week behing ditched for a long weekend at the beginning of June for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Then there's the excitement of the Olympic torch passing right past Whte Moss House on 21 June ( I think that's right, but don't quote me)- followed of course by the Olympics, but as we weren't lucky with the tickets, it looks like we'll be here for all of you who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of London from 27 July to 12 August.

Anyway- book now for 2012- at 2011 rates!

Here's a photo of the front of the house with the creeper on, which you can see in all it's ruby red glory if you visit in the next few weeks.
