Bluebell blog 2019

Bluebells- they're everywhere this year.

Bluebells -in the garden, on the roadside, behind the house, in the car park. Lake District bluebells are running riot.

The guests who have just stayed in our cottage, Brockstone Grasmere Cottage, were delighted to be surrounded by bluebells. The had a great stay in our "beautiful comfortable house"

It's many degrees colder

this weekend than at last week's Easter weekend. Our 3 and 5 year old grandchildren paddled in the lake, got wet, stripped off, and lay down in the water. It was freezing. They loved it. Wild water swimming is a big thing in the Lake District right now- they could be well on the way to joining this great activity in the future.

If you like the idea of wild swimming in the Lakes the lovely people at Swim The Lakes in Ambleside can give you help and advice.

If you'd like to stay at our Grasmere Cottage with stunning views a try wild swimming, we have a few weeks left available this year. More information here on our other blog.

Save £100 on a July week in Grasmere

Save £100 if you can stay the week commencing Saturday 7 July 2018 in our Grasmere Cottage with amazing views.

This week was £845, but we've reduced it to £745 for last minute bookers. This is for up to four guests, and you can bring a dog too.

A huge feature of a stay at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage is the ability to walk from the door in all directions. There are short walks, long walks, tough walks, easy walks. The guest who just left walked twelve mile round trips , doing the Langdale Pikes on foot there and back. This might be a bit too much for most of us, but here are some of the easier walks you can do from Brockstone, which is in the White Moss area of Grasmere. We call these "White Moss Walks"

Read our reviews here, look at our website, ask if you have any questions. We have a few weeks still available in 2018. We already have several bookings for 2019. Come and stay at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage! Join our list of fans. We're on Facebook here , and you can find us on twitter @GrasmereCottage and also @whitemosshouse.

White Moss House has it's own Bluebell Wood

I've lived at White Moss House for nearly 40 years, and I've taken our bluebell wood for granted. We've always have bluebells growing up in the woodland garden at the back of the house.

White Moss House bluebells.

When a friend came round and saw that I had lots of bluebells in jugs everywhere she was slightly shocked .
Friend-
"Have you been picking wild bluebells? I didn't think you were supposed to do this"
Me
"No, they're not really wild bluebells. They're from our own bluebell wood"
Friend
"You have your own bluebell wood?!"
Me
"Of course- doesn't everyone?"

OK, I didn't actually say that but it reminded me how much we take for granted. White Moss House was bought by William Wordsworth (yes, that one) for his son. We have the famous man's signature on the document. It's just how our house is.

Occasionally I moan that the house is "a bit old" and say I'd like "a nice newly built modern place" but really- it's very special.

We have a hut or shed , not sure what to call it, up among the bluebells in the back garden. I like to think that past owners were inspired to write great things in the garden hut. It may have been put up by the Wordsworth family, who lived here until the 1930s.

Culture in the Lake District

Culture in the Lake District.

Culture in the Lake District?  I'm guessing that if you asked most people about "Culture in the Lake District" they'd mention Wordsworth and "Daffodils" and then maybe look a bit blank.

Wordsworth's Daffodils at Rydal where he lived at Rydal Mount

There is a terrific website called "Lakes Culture" which showcases a huge variety of music, arts, history, happenings, theatre and lots more going on in the Lakes throughout the year.

On the Lakes Culture website is a list of "Must See" on your Lake District visit.  Many of these are close to our holiday cottage , Brockstone Grasmere Cottage , some of them within walking distance.

I've started another blog article about Music in the Lake District. which I'll try to update during the year. Come to the Lakes and as well as the superb scenery and outdoor activities, immerse yourself in Culture!

Things to do and see in the Lakes right now- the first week of May 2018.

It's blossom time in the Lakes. Look and marvel! Here's an article I wrote about Blossom Time in the Lakes.  One of my favourite places to visit at this time of year is NT Sizergh Castle just outside Kendal. Here is a photo from earlier years of the wonderful blossom at Sizergh in spring.

Blossom in May at Sizergh
There are festivals throughout the year in the Lakes. This weekend sees PrintFest 2018 in Ulverston. Well worth a visit. Ulverston is on the edge of the Lakes, not usually as busy as Central Lakes. It's a lovely town with lots of interesting privately run shops , cafes and pubs. I'm always amazed by the number of pubs in Ulverston!

Winter views at Brockstone Cottage

Winter views taken today at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage

Today's views from Brockstone Grasmere Cottage

The weather is crisp and cold. The press have dubbed this cold spell "The Beast from the East" . We're on the west, so we've missed the snow and strong winds so far.

You can see that people walk past Brockstone Grasmere Cottage on the famous "Coffin Route " from Grasmere to Rydal, recently voted 27th best walk anywhere in the UK. Going right past our cottage door. No cars- just walkers. Lovely!
The ridge in the foreground of the photos runs between Loughrigg and Silver How. The snowy height in the background is Wetherlam and the Coniston Fells, some miles away.

Special Offer

You could stay here for a week from Saturday 10 March for only £490 ( reduced from £590) , of from Saturday 24 March for £590 ( reduced from £690). After that, the first available week is 7-14 July, at the rate of £845.

You may bring your dog at no extra charge.

Looking forward to daffodils

I'm looking forward to daffodils. Here I'm posting just a few of my many daffodil photos taken over the years.

Daffodils in the garden of Brockstone Grasmere Cottage.

The Lake District is famous for its daffodils. William Wordsworth's most famous poem, Daffodils is known the world over. Wordsworth owned my house, and he wrote his poetry half a mile along the lane at Dove Cottage.

Daffodils from the garden of Brockstone Grasmere holiday cottage

We're just over a month from the Winter Solstice, and the days are getting just a little longer. Buds are pushing up through the soil at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage. Our Lake District cottage might just be your perfect holiday cottage. In March, the garden is absolutely bursting with daffodils.

Monarch Airline collapse

Very sad to hear of the collapse of Monarch. We've had many happy holidays in Lanzarote and other places over the last 40 years that have begun and ended with a Monarch flight from Manchester. I know they've been on the edge for a few years now, but we'll miss them. They provided lots of flights from Manchester and the service was pretty good.

If you were planning to go away for the late half term week ( from Saturday 28 October) and were booked on Monarch flights- maybe you'll want to stay in the UK now? Maybe you've nothing planned but would like an autumn break in the beautiful Lake District? This is a cheeky reminder that we still have the second half term week available at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage , at a reduced rate for last minute booking. (was £890, now £690)
