Winter views at Brockstone Cottage

Winter views taken today at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage

Today's views from Brockstone Grasmere Cottage

The weather is crisp and cold. The press have dubbed this cold spell "The Beast from the East" . We're on the west, so we've missed the snow and strong winds so far.

You can see that people walk past Brockstone Grasmere Cottage on the famous "Coffin Route " from Grasmere to Rydal, recently voted 27th best walk anywhere in the UK. Going right past our cottage door. No cars- just walkers. Lovely!
The ridge in the foreground of the photos runs between Loughrigg and Silver How. The snowy height in the background is Wetherlam and the Coniston Fells, some miles away.

Special Offer

You could stay here for a week from Saturday 10 March for only £490 ( reduced from £590) , of from Saturday 24 March for £590 ( reduced from £690). After that, the first available week is 7-14 July, at the rate of £845.

You may bring your dog at no extra charge.

Daffodils at Brockstone Cottage Grasmere

The daffodils at Brockstone Cottage have been beautiful this year. Grasmere is famous for daffodils, thanks to William Wordsworth who often walked past our cottage back in the days when it was two cottages owned by the Le Fleming family of Rydal Hall, who used the cottages for their estate workers.

Bench in Brockstone Garden
Here is a pretty bench set in the corner of Brockstone garden. From the bench you can look down on the footpath below. You can see the gate on the "coffin route" through which many people walk every day on their hike between Grasmere and Rydal. The view from the bench is in the picture below.

Looking down from Brockstone garden to the path below, with views over Rydal Water

Turn the other way, and look up the hill. More daffodils. Brockstone garden extends as far as the fence you can see, and beyond that there is fellside, leading on to the side of Nab Scar fell.

Brockstone garden looking uphill from the bench- full of daffodils
Brockstone Grasmere Cottage has a wild woodland garden. In March , this is absolutely full of daffodils. Guests are very welcome to pick them and take a big bunch home at the end of their week in the cottage.

The picture above is taken through the side window of the master bedroon at Brockstone Cottage. The bedroom has a fourposter bed. From the front window of both bedrooms you see Rydal Water and the hills over towards Grasmere. On a clear day you can see the Coniston Fells.

If you want to see daffodils at Brockstone Grasmere cottage you'll have to wait until 2018. However, we can offer you bluebells . The week of 22-29 April is still available, and in past years this week has been a great week for bluebells. The woods around Brockstone of full of these beautiful flowers. You can see pictures if you scroll back through this blog.
Even better news is that we've reduced that week from £790 to £650 for last minute bookings. Can you come? Can you take advantage of this special offer?  Do you know someone who might like a week in this lovely spot? We'd love to hear from you.

Great reviews for our Lakes holiday cottage.

We had a delightful family from Holland staying at the cottage for the last two weeks. They arrived at the same time as ex hurricane Bertha, and the weather has been on the cool side and a little rainy for their stay-not like the glorious heatwave we had earlier.

Nevertheless, they said they had had a fantastic time, loved the cottage, and in fact the son had declared it his "best holiday ever!" Lovely!

The previous guests were also very kind, posting superb reviews . You can read their lyrical review here. They say that Brockstone Cottage is "the most wonderful cottage in the Lakes" Isn't that a lovely heading to read?

It's Grasmere Sports today- sunny and fine . Should be an entertaining day for visitors and locals.

We had a cancellation at our cottage for the week 20 - 27 September. The week was £750, but we've reduced it to £650 now if you are able to take up a last minute booking. There's already an autumnal nip in the air. September is such a beautiful month in the lakes. Plus, the crowds have thinned out, the children are back at school- perfect. Can you take advantage of our special offer?

Here's a photo taken on one of the many walks from the door. This is from the Alcock Tarn path looking down on Grasmere, taken on a winter's day. This view could be on your doorstep .....

Special Offer 11 - 18 April in our Grasmere Cottage

We have reduced the rate for this week to just £590 if two of you are staying, or £640 if there are 3 or 4 guests.

As a further offer, you can stay free of charge on Thursday, 10 April, or arrive early on Friday 11th ( usual check in time from 4pm)

We've started a new website for Brockstone, our Lakes cottage with amazing views. It's still being built, but if you'd like to take a look and maybe leave a comment , or share it ,that would be great.

I've put some pretty pics of rhododenrons on there that I took last year in May. They could well be early this year.

Here's one I took earlier.

This from our neighbour's garden at Heugh Folds, just along the road from Brockstone. It is an amazing garden in spring.

Can you spot our Lakes Holiday Cottage in this picture?

I set off from White Moss in the sunshine this morning. From Loughrigg Terrace you can look back to White Moss, and if you lift your eyes and look, you can see our Lake District Holiday Cottage, Brockstone. Can you see it in this photo? It's right in the middle, on the side of Nab Scar, in a clearing between two sets of trees.

If I swing the camera down a little you would see Grasmere Lake to the left and the River Rothay running by.
Here's another view .

And here is more of a close up view. All these are taken on a great little walk, which you can do from the door of our Lakes Holiday Cottage.
You can stay here in March for just £290 for a four night midweek break, - one of our last minute offers. You can read more about walks from White Moss and Brockstone Cottage here.

Lots going in the the Lakes right now

If you can tear yourself away from the Olympics, there are lots of good reasons to visit the Lakes right now.The Lake District Summer Music Festival is on now and runs until 12 August. You can hear wonderful music in beautiful venues. It's a real treat.

Also, running though the whole of July, is the Lake Artists Summer Exhibition in Grasmere Village Hall. This is an annual event which attracts over 10,000 visitors. You can buy a piece of very special original art work, or just browse and be amazed.

Now would be an excellent time to visit the Lakes, and stay at White Moss House, in the heart of Wordsworth's Lake District, as we have some great special offers for you. From now until 17 August, our room rates have been reduced by £20 per night! For more details, please take a look at our Special offers page on the White Moss House website. You can also email me, sue@whitemoss.com for our best quote for longer stays.

If the sun shines you could be sitting here enjoying afternoon tea and our home made Lakeland tea bread- free to all our guests on arrival.

Otter spotted outside White Moss House!

Yesterday we were walking down the path from Brocsktone Cottage to our gate, past the White Moss waterfall, when a creature ran out of our Coach House gate, across our path about 50 yards away, and dashed towards the beck ( Dunnabeck).

I wasn't sure what it was. I wondered if it might be an otter, but I had only ever seen them in water before, and this creature had a longish, fairly furry tail. I didn't know if otters had tails at all. So, anyway, I looked for otter pictures and found that indeed they do have tails, and the pictures of them on land are exactly what I saw! So that was the first otter I'd seen apart from in a wildlife reserve. I'm thrilled!

On a more mundane note, we've had cancellations for this weekend, and are offering really good rates. Check our Special offers page or ring us on 015394 35295 for our rates and availability. It's not raining here ( at present!) and the forecast is reasonable for the next two days.

Red Squirrels and bluebells

Primroses, violets, and a great view of Brockstone and Rydal Water

It's been a glorious day in the Lake District. Clear blue skies. However, out of the sun is was about 8 degrees- last week it was about 18 degrees.

I wandered around for an hour leaving White Moss House, going up the path to Brockstone, out on to White Moss view point and back. Here are a few pictures I took today.

Rydal Primroses by the path from White Moss to Brockstone Cottage

Wood anemones by Dunnabeck stream on the coffin route to Rydal

Little wild violets by Brockstone on the coffin road.

From White Moss view point I took a picture that shows our self catering cottage, Brockstone, perched up on the side of the hill, ovelooking Rydal Water. The lake was incredibly blue. Wordsworth called Rydal Water " a fair sister of the sky", and today I could see exactly what he meant.

Brockstone is the speck on the left by the trees.

Brockstone has weeks available in April and May for self catering in the gorgeous spot. We've knocked £100 off the usual rate. For more information read all about Brockstone Grasmere self catering cottage here.
We also have offers after Easter at White Moss House , whic hyou can find on our White Moss House website
